Financial Counselling and the ABC makes Dollars and Sense

It is ‘Dollars and Sense’ month during June on ABC 891 with Peter Goers.

UnitingCare Wesley Bowden has been partnering with ABC Radio and UCW Adelaide to deliver a series of programmes on managing household finances; a very topical issue due to rising interest rates, petrol price increase and inflation in a more general sense.

Rosalyn Williams, Team Leader – Low Income Support Services at UCW Bowden, and also President of the South Australian Financial Counsellors’ Association, launched the series with Carolyn Deane, Financial Counselling Resource Officer, UCW Adelaide on Tuesday evening, 27th May on the well known Peter Goers’ evening show. Carolyn and Charmaine Allison, Financial Counsellor, then followed up over 3-evenings with Peter Goers discussing budgeting, financial difficulties, credit cards and options when people have large debts.

On Tuesday 10 June our own Rosalyn Williams, and Jos Hensing, Financial Counsellor, at UCW Bowden were interviewed by Peter Goers about what to do if you receive a court summons due to a long-overdue debt, and how to deal with the legal process.

On Thursday evening, 12th June from 7:30pm Rosalyn was joined by John Morris of UCW Adelaide to discuss loan alternatives for people on low income including; low interest Step-Up loans and interest free No Interest Loans (NILS).

Monday, 16th June from 9:30pm Joy Ephraums, Family Support Worker, UCW Bowden and Cristina Shelton, Multicultural Support Worker, UCW Bowden talked with Peter Goers about how issues of money management impact upon family relationships.

Tuesday, 17th June from 7:30pm Michele Osmond from Lifeline, Mt Gambier joined Rosalyn Williams to discuss financial counselling and other help for gamblers that have financial difficulties as well as providing some insight into family money issues for people in regional SA.

Carolyn Deane and Rosalyn Williams wrapped up the series with Peter Goers at 7:30pm on Thursday evening, 19th June.

The participation by UCW Bowden staff in community education opportunities such as this is essential in our goal of assisting people in need in whatever way we can as well as inform the general community where assistance is available.
