Growing for the Future (November Update)

Torrensville Child, Family and Montessori Centre, Thursday 12th November, 2009

Towards the end of Term 3, our Kindy children established a new garden bed named “Butterfly Garden”, consisting of native plants that we hope will attract butterflies. The children from Torrensville Primary School visited us to say thank you for letting them be involved in our project and presented our children with plants for the Butterfly Garden, two garden gnomes and a lovely Thank You poster. We are developing plans to enhance our partnership with the Torrensville Primary School in 2010 for our Growing for the Future project.

The staff and children have been busy harvesting produce that has been used by our chef in food preparation. New seedlings have been planted including sweet corn and snow peas. Our hanging baskets are growing strawberries and cherry tomatoes.

We have also purchased two wine barrels, in which the children have planted dwarf pears and a mulberry bush – hopefully the children will get to experience the life cycle of silk worms one day!

Our Under 2s room took great delight in caring for, growing and harvesting mushrooms which were also used in our meals. Staff are now considering growing more or trying something different.

Our Toddler Room continues to collect unused paper for shredding and feeding to our worms. They are very proud of their worms and how much paper they eat!

As we are near the end of another year we are developing plans for 2010 that will also include linking with our community on a more tangible basis – we will keep you posted.

Until then, happy growing!
