Nick's Story - A Story From The Multicultural Team

Nick Amri is a UCW Bowden client who, at a recent parenting course, told the group about his 5 month journey of life change. Nick lives with a disability, and although he is unable to work, his family has always been able to get buy on the limited funds they do have.  This year in May was the first time Nick had sought assistance at UCW Bowden.  His son was soon to obtain his driving license and Nick dreamed of buying a family car however couldn’t see how this may be possible.

After making an appointment with UCW Bowden’s Multicultural Officer, Masoud,  Nick was helped to complete the paperwork and fortunate to obtain a Step Up Loan.  Masoud was also able to obtain additional finances to install a remote controlled roller door at Nick’s home to make it easier for him to open with his disability.

With Nick’s trust in Masoud he returned for further guidance with an issue that had been troubling him. Five years ago his family had been a victim of a violent attack in the suburbs of Adelaide and following the incident his younger son had developed a speech impediment.  His son’s stuttered speech had made him a target for bullying at school, and so Nick was desperate to have his son moved to another school outside of his district where he knew other children he was comfortable being with.  Masoud introduced Nick and his son to a speech therapist and after speaking to the school’s principal his son was relocated to the new school where he is happier, and the stress has been relieved from Nick and his wife.  Nick now attends parent counselling workshops on a regular basis and is eager for his story to be told so that others who may need help will know that there are people who can help to make a change.
