The Young Carers Program is an Australian Government Initiative designed to keep young carers in Primary and Secondary education. The program supports young people up to the age of 18 who provide care in a family affected by illness, disability or mental health.
Young Carers provide a wide range of practical and emotional assistance to those for whom they care which can often prevent them from being able to socialise with friends, or just ‘have a break’.
Assistance young carers may be providing includes:
• accompanying the person cared for to medical appointments
• assisting the person they care for with dressing, bathing, toileting and mobility
• administering or reminding about medication
• providing social support to the care recipient
• providing support during periods of increased emotional or physical stress
• buying groceries, cooking, cleaning, handling household finances
• advocacy and negotiation with service providers
• caring for siblings
Caring for someone can be a great experience but it can also be hard at times. The Young Carer Program provides short term and emergency respite services to support young carers and give them temporary relief from their caring role. These services are facilitated by the North and West Metropolitan Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre.
The Young Carer Program is here to support Young Carers, who live in the North & West metropolitan areas of Adelaide, to manage the pressures and responsibilities of their caring role. We provide young carers the opportunity to have fun, attend activities, make new friends, learn new skills, meet other Carers and most importantly to “have a break”.
